Eligibility requirements:

The eligibility requirements to be a City of Arlington Firefighter Trainee are established by the Texas Local Government Code, Chapter 143 and the City of Arlington's Fire Department Civil Service Commission Local Rules. The following represents part of these initial eligibility requirements:

The Lateral Transfer Program is designed to recruit experienced firefighters by offering applicants competitive compensation based on their years of service with other qualifying agencies.  This program is for pay purposes only.  Actual work experience at any other agency will not be considered towards seniority or promotional eligibility with the Arlington Fire Department. 

 To be eligible for the lateral transfer program, applicants must have been employed (full time) as a firefighter/AEMT or firefighter/paramedic within the last 180 days prior to the applicant’s conditional job offer.   Additionally, the applicant must have completed two years of continuous service with a qualifying agency as a full-time paid firefighter/AEMT or firefighter/paramedic.  Out of state firefighters must obtain a Texas Commission of Fire Protection (TCFP) and Department of State Health Services (DSHS) certification/license prior to start date. Applicants may be eligible for transfer up to the 24-month step on the Fire Pay Plan.

  • Be at least 18 to 45 years of age at the time of testing. Must have reached 18 years of age as of the date of the exam, and not have reached 46 years of age as of the date of the appointment.
  • Be a U.S. citizen by birth or naturalization.
  • Be able to read, write, and speak the English language.
  • Be able to pass a Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) and/or other criminal background check(s).
  • Possess the following educational credentials prior to the first day of employment (do not submit these documents with your pre-registration online application) a high school diploma or a high school equivalency certificate (GED).

Complete an online City of Arlington Firefighter Trainee Exam Application no later than Tuesday, November 5, 2024.


After submitting the completed application, if you are qualified to take the exam, an email will be sent with additional details and instructions for the test.  Only those applicants that meet the lateral transfer program requirements will be allowed to test.
